Zojirushi Mr. Bento Stainless-Steel lined Lunch Jar, Silver
Reviews : Absolutely wonderful!
My husband and I bought the Mr. & Ms. Bentos as Christmas presents for eachother this year. The Mr. Bento is a perfect size for his lunches, which I now pack each night. The Ms. seemed to small for me (I am a big lunch person), but I have yet to still be hungry. The number and size of containers forces me to choose wisely what I pack. For instance, Cheetos take up a lot of space, but are not filling, whereas cutup fruit is more filling for the space. In turn, our lunchces are much healthier. We've been saving money not eating out and we both feel better. The only downside to the Mr. Bento (I think) is the bag, which would be wonderful if it had room for a water bottle of some sort. The Ms. Bento has a terrific bag and fits a tall/long nalgene bottle aside the bento inside. All in all, we LOVE them!
Excellent Bento - But So Much Food!
I ordered the Mr. Bento lunch jar because I was tired of eating out for lunch at work, or worse yet, hitting up the vending machines.
My Bento jar arrived quickly, and in perfect condition. Unlike some previous purchasers, I did get an English translation of the instructions with my Bento jar, although it's a pretty foolproof product as long as you know not to microwave the lids or treat it too harshly.
When I use my Mr. Bento jar, I pack and stack it the night before and then set it in my refrigerator for the whole thing to chill. It won't fit into the refrigerator at work (too tall) so it sits on my desk at the office until I am ready to eat.
Because I have access to a microwave, I don't need to keep my food hot. However, I have found that my Mr. Bento does do an excellent job of keeping my food nice and cool, although not ice cold. Others have done an excellent job of reviewing how Mr. Bento keeps the food cold (i.e. while not being a full-on thermos, it's got plenty of insulation between the bowls, their lids, and the metal outer shell).
The carrying bag is fashioned out of a nice stiff canvas with a zipper and a pull enclosure. I love the spork and spork cover that comes with the jar as well.
As I eat my food during the workday, I wash out each bowl at the sink in our office kitchen and take it back to my desk. At the end of the day I go home, put it on the counter, and pack it and chill it before going to bed.
My goal with this product was to eat healthier and more regularly during the day. My typical Bento jar has the following:
- Top (smallest uninsulated) bowl: a handful of pretzels and a few lowfat animal crackers
- Second (larger uninsulated) bowl: carrot sticks and hummus (hummus in a silicon cupcake cup)
- Third (main, insulated) bowl: 1/2C of cooked rice with chicken or black beans or some other veggies/meat.
- Fourth (bottom, insulated) soup bowl: A homemade soup, this week it's been corn chowder
My intention was to eat regularly throughout the day, every couple of hours, to keep my blood sugar levels steady and hopefully lose weight, control cravings etc. That was my intention. The only problem? There's just too much food! I have to really work to eat my way through all of the food that fits into my Mr. Bento, and I rarely can. Usually either the soup or the main bowl ends up in the refrigerator at the office, while I take home the other 3 bowls and refill them for the next day. I'm a 5'6" woman, medium build, with a pretty good appetite, but it's just too much food for me.
On the plus side, my husband loves my Mr. Bento. In fact, he's eyeing it jealously. So I have splurged yet again and bought the Ms. Bento (3 bowls) for myself. As soon as it arrives, my husband will inherit my Mr. Bento for his lunches.
The beauty of the Bento jars, and "bento" in general, is that it's great for people like me who want more creative lunches, and who are sick of sandwiches and potato chips and what have you. The product is great, and while it's a little expensive, the money I save from not raiding the snack machine ($5 a week, at least) alone will pay for the Bento jar in just a couple of months. Highly recommended, but if you don't have a big appetite, you might want to consider a Ms. Bento instead of this jar.

FoodSaver Continuous Roll Bag Material, 11 Inch by 18 Feet (2 Rolls)
Reviews : Cheaper and more convenient than the bags
We freeze a large amount of summer produce from our garden and from our CSA subscription. These rolls are the best way of doing that. Not inexpensive, but definitely cheaper than the individual bags and more convenient by being individually sizable.
Rolls save money - cut to size
I buy the rolls so I can cut them to any size I want without wasting the bag. If I want to freeze 2 chicken breast - no waste of bag, if I want to freeze 4 chicken breasts - cut to size. I love that I can stack the chicken in the freezer without it falling over. We just bought 30 lbs of chicken breasts - boneless at Albertsons because they were offering them at $1.97 lb. You can't let that get past with todays prices.

Pyrex Storage 14-Piece Round Set, Clear with Blue Lids
Reviews : Really a great product
I really love this set. I've been using it since the day it was delivered, and they are definitely worth it. The lids fit really tightly on the bowls, so even if the bowl ends up sideways in my bag, I don't have a spill. And I can stack them in the fridge as well.
switch to glass
I got these containers because of the dangers of plastic. I've enjoyed using these for freezing meals for the week. The only thing I don't like is that they get extremely hot in the microwave. So use caution and oven mits. Which is fine at home, but becomes a lot of work at the office.

Oxo Good Grips LiquiSeal Travel Mug
Reviews : Hard to clean top prevents it from becoming my favorite mug
I received this recently at one of our 'secret Santa' Christmas get-togethers. Up until then, I've been using the Thermos Nissan 18-Ounce Stainless-Steel Insulated Travel Tumbler almost exclusively for the past several months. I am pleased with the Thermos but I welcomed having two good-quality coffee mugs so I didn't have to wash the mug every morning before filling it up - with 2 I would do it every other morning, I thought. I will not do a comparison between the two, I only wanted to note that we do have choices when it comes to quality travel mugs these days and some are better than others.
I will enumerate some of the OXO features and my verdict will follow:
+ 14 oz. mug with a grooved plastic lid that closes tight
+ the body is double-walled steel with vacuum so it keeps a beverage close to the initial temperature for a reasonable amount of time
= fits nicely in my car's cup holder but, being as tall as it is, it may not be too stable in some of the shallower ones
- a sealing mechanism with several moving and hidden parts of which the on-off clicking button is visible at the top can not be cleaned easily and, if your coffee has milk-cream some very unpleasant deposits can accumulate inside
- the junction between the plastic upper ring and the steel bottom makes cleaning the inside difficult as well - the top plastic band is narrower than the steel lower body, meaning that there is an interior 'ledge' that had to be carefully cleaned or residue will accumulate
The big negative on this mug is what was supposed to distinguish it from 'the rest' - the top with its on/off seal button assembly. This makes the OXO not my 'first pick' whenever I have a choice of mugs. The only time I pick the OXO is when I forget to clean the Thermos the previous night (and the Thermos is very easy to clean) but, knowing what COULD reside under that on/off button seems to subtract from my coffee-drinking enjoyment.
If I was going to buy myself a third coffee mug, it would not be an OXO. I understand that it is POSSIBLE to clean the OXO very thoroughly but the cleaning is difficult and, for as long as there are better alternatives, most of us are likely to pick the better alternatives.
The OXO loses 2 stars because of the cleaning inconvenience, it keeps 3 because it does not spill and it keeps the coffee warm for a reasonably long time.
Love gone wrong.
First, I bought a red mug for myself. Later, a grey one for my husband. We loved the size, the good seal, and the sturdyness of the mugs. We made our own lattes here at home.
It appeared to be like heaven. We cleaned them by rinsing them (including lid) right after emptying them, and also putting them through the dishwasher each night.
Until the other day my husband said he was drinking his coffee and found a "chunk" come out of it. He was disgusted. So I set about cleaning the little buggers...
And there is no way in hell I could EVER take another drink from either of them, or buy another one of these mugs. I used some pipe cleaners and a good pull on the plunger to get up into the lid to clean it out...
OMG, it was the most disgusting thing. I seriously almost fainted when I realized WE WERE DRINKING OUT OF THIS THING.
Oh. My. God.
So I came to Amazon to order new mugs for us -- and happened to look this up and see that we are NOT the only people to have this problem!

Norpro Butter Keeper
Reviews : BUTTER Keeper
The Norpro butter keeper is a great way to keep your butter soft. So very easy to use and small in size. The only way to always have nice, soft butter.
arrived in pieces
I should have listened to the other reviewers. I thought I'd take a chance on shipping, but no luck. Like many other prior customers the keeper arrived in pieces, probably due to a very poor packaging job.
