Sports Illustrated (6-month) Reviews :
Greatest Product Ever
Bought this for my boyfriend for Christmas. He says: "Received quickly. Award-winning journalism, in a very entertaining package. Two thumbs up and smiles all around."

after all these years
The two principal articles in the December 22, 2008 issue of Sports Illustrated number that lies before me are why SI remains the uncontested leader in North American general sports periodicals. Jim Trotter's 'D As in Dominant' connects the dots between the Steelers' Steel Curtain of yore an its present day top-ranked NFL defense. Joe Posnanski's 'noir' take on the winter baseball meetings in Las Vegas (!) captures the pathos and ridicule that are both required for a full understanding of this off-season institution.

Both are simply great sports writing.

SI is no longer the best source for up-to-the-minute sports news in our digital era, if it ever was. But the magazine's editors know what it is and what it isn't and major on bring us fine interpretation and commentary on the sports we live week after week, complemented with simply stunning photography.

You'll need another publication if you want to go really deep into, say, baseball or soccer. But for riveting and occasionally hilarious writing on the sports we love from people who know them deeply, SI is still the obvious choice. No instant replay required.

Cat Fancy (1-year) Reviews :
A fun read...
This was a gift to my teenage niece. I have been getting this magazine for about 25 years. I don't rely heavily on it for veterinary or behavioral advice, mostly because of lack of depth--and my cat "problems" always seem to be unique or just a little different. But I think it is a fun magazine, light entertainment, beautiful pictures. I even like the ads. Sometimes I bundle a year's worth at a time and sell them for $3 at a garage sale; people have purchased them for retirement/nursing homes, etc. Recycling at its best!

Hey kitty kitty
Why would anyone subscribe to a magazine devoted to cats? (Do you know that you cannot "own" a cat? You can co-habitate, you can "keep" a cat. Cat "owner"ship just is not good thing. You must treat your cat as an equal.)

So, "Cat Fancy" is a generally helpful magazine. The cover story always features a different breed and alone is worth the price of the issue. There are plenty of informative articles and beautiful photographs. For example, the latest issue includes info about catnip (even lions and tigers feel the effects), presidential cats, how to photograph your cat, how to deal with the top five feline problems, FIP, natural diets, feline fitness, feline obesity and how to combat it, benefits for cats in being a "pet," and lots and lots of breed ads and ads for cat-related items.

I particularly was interested in the top five feline problems because I have a new cat that refuses to meld into the family. She is hissy and aggressive and combative. She even bites me. I hate to give her up (or give up on her), but she's been here two months and has created an unhappy family unit. The article was absolutely no help and was basically superficial fluff.

Other articles had more depth. The one about play tells us important things, like cats who no longer play are physically or mentally ill. In fact, play is as important to cats as to children. This is especially true for exclusively indoor cats.

The final line: Although I will enjoy a year's subscription, I probably will not renew.

Young Rider (1-year) Reviews :
Nice poster
When I was younger I use to go to barnes and noble and flip through young rider. Only reason why I bought it was if there was a nice picture for the huge center poster. Even at a young age the articles seemed ridiculously simple and never actually contained useful information. I ended up subscribing to Horse Illustrated as soon as my parents agreed to pay for it and continued for a few years. If you want nice posters get this. If you want good general magazine you will actually read and learn from that also has nice picture (and its own centerfold, though smaller), get Horse Illustrated.

We like Young Rider
Having tried serveral horse magazines for my 11 year old daughter, by far our favorite magazine is Young Rider.

Architectural Digest - One Fantastic Magazine
Architectural Digest is fantastic. I look forward to receiving it each month to peruse all the beautiful estates, homes, gardens, furniture, art, history, and designs presented that are available not only in all areas of the United States, but also around the globe.

Once about what you could have, but no longer...
Once upon a time, what you saw in AD was what you might one day be able to do yourself. It was about tasteful, even higher end, but it was obtainable. Now it's about the houses and interiors that even the more successful of us out there will never be able to attain. Please quit touring the houses of the celebrities, the rich and famous, and instead go back to the days of those who were once like the rest of us. In short, go back to when the stuff we saw in AD gave us ideas for our own dream houses. Now you are the tasteful "home" equivalent of People Magazine...

Modern Bride (1-year) Reviews :
Great for planning a wedding!
I really love this magazine. I have found a lot of ideas for dresses, colors, cakes, decorations and much more. I really recommend this for any woman who is planning her dream wedding. It is a great tool to have and one of the best that I have found!

Newly wed.... Loved planning my dream wedding
I absolutely loved every minute of planning my wedding. Brides magazine was my favorite mag, but Modern Bride was also helpful. There are always many ideas to steal for favors, invitations, flowers, gowns, etc. Plus occassionally there were coupons for 25% off Michaels. That comes in handy with purchases such as ribbons, jordan almonds, etc.

If you only want to subscribe to one bridal magazine then choose Brides, but why not enjoy a magazine every month (both magazines are everyother) and enjoy the planning of the most romantic, wonderful day starting the rest of your life.

Happy planning!
