Needle in a Haystack
After reading many interesting articles on the Wired website, I figured I'd try the magazine since it is cheap. I won't be renewing that subscription.

There ARE some genuinely interesting, informative, etc articles in the magazine. Unfortunately there are only a few such articles and you'll have to wade through myriad ads, fluff, and pretentious rants to find them.

Better off reading only the interesting articles online for free.

Must have magazine for "foodies"
Gotta have this magazine if you are a lover of easy, delicious, unique food. Recipes for weeknights, weekends, get togethers and special occasions. Each recipe has pictures and easy to use instructions. Even for an experienced cook, the recipes are intriguing and unique enough to capture your interest and peak your curiosity enough to "give it a try". For the inexperienced cook, they are so easy to follow that there is no fear to "give it a try." Gotta have for "foodies" like me!!

Love it!
I'm very pleased with this magazine. It shipped fast and has lots of good recipes for me to try. Food Network is my favorite channel and now I have a feeling this is going to be my favorite magazine too. Try it!

Consistently good magazine.
I have been a female reader of Men's Journal for 10 years. The articles are always very good, open and fair, and of excellent journalistic quality. They have product reviews, health questions, sports information, etc. The magazine is well balanced and only has a few 'men only' related articles. It is also very cheap as far as magazines go and this was a gift subscription for someone. Everyone I have ever gifted it to has liked it.

Good most of the time
This magazine is good about 75% of the time. There are one or two issues packed with great articles, and then one or two I just throw away because they are crap. Most of the time, the crap ones are based on European tycoons or murder of heiresses that don't hold any real value. The photos are always breathtaking. Take out the ads (about 2/3rds of the mag- some aren't bad), and this is the best of the best.

substance as well as style
I think V.F. has sometimes been unfairly dismissed as a lightweight Hollywood or "chick" magazine. Well OK, the cover story (and photo) is usually in the entertainment field, and the publisher's media kit states that the readership is 79 percent female. What's gender got to do with it? Most of the stories are serious and intelligent enough to be worthy of anyone's attention. Consider, for example, some of the topics of recent articles: the background behind the financial meltdown at Lehman Brothers; the $3 trillion cost of the Iraq war; Vladimir Putin's power grab in Russia; real estate woes in the Hamptons and at the Plaza Hotel; Rupert Murdoch's media empire; Bobby Kennedy's ill-fated 1968 presidential campaign...to name just a few. The depth and sophistication of these stories, and the quality of the writing, is certainly equal to anything you'd find in the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic Magazine, The New Yorker, and similar "serious" publications. Even the movie star subjects, such as the recent cover story on Marilyn Monroe, generally have a weightier slant to them. Don't confuse this with the mindless junk you'd find in supermarket tabloids. As for those "shocking" photos of Miley Cyrus....well, the whole controversy seemed to be almost a satire of how a puritanical public can become outraged about nothing. At any rate, I would not have wanted to miss what the outcry was all about. I find that every month there is always something worth reading, and I learn a few things as well as being entertained. So why four stars instead of five? Well, while depth and details are good, I find that some of the articles tend to be a little too long, and about halfway through I'm tempted to start skimming. Also, Graydon's Carter's Bush-bashing editorials month after month can get a little tiresome. I'm not a big admirer of Bush myself, but it's long past time to "give it a rest".
These small complaints aside, I recommend this as a very worthwhile publication. A word about price: the promotional rates at Amazon are typically better that those on the postcards inserted in the magazine, plus you avoid that ridiculous "postage and handling" fee. Twenty bucks total for two years (at Amazon), which is about the cost of a mere four copies purchased individually at the newsstand, seems too good a deal to pass up.

Marie Claire magazine
This magazine was requested by my daughter for Christmas. She felt that she had time to read 3 magazines a month, and this was one of them. The first issue arrived much earlier than I expected. Great service!

Better than others
This women's magazine definitely has a lot more to offer than other women's mags. It is well rounded with fashion, beauty tips, as well as pertinent stories about women (not only celebrities) as well as recommendations for music, books, movies etc. It's definitely not the same content every month, which is the most important thing for me.

Oh, and with the offer from Amazon, I got a whole year subscribtion for only $3! Nothing beats that!

Even though the prices in this mag are freaking out of this (my) world, the price of the magazine isn't and the illustrations are priceless for those of you that have no clue as to what fashion is. Popular Mechanics - much better than Popular Science
I have subscribed to Popular Mechanics for years now. PM has articles on the latest science and technology, as well as do it yourself project stuff, from woodworking to engines. It's geared toward those who actually work with their minds and hands, not just armchair mechanics or technology buffs - although they would like it too. I finally dropped my subscription to Popular Science. Popular Mechanics has it all.
